It also supports individuals coping with grief, difficult life transitions, relationship struggles, and low self-esteem.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from psychotherapy. Many patients seek support simply to process stress, feel more empowered, or develop healthier thinking patterns. With Dr. Jacob Buinewicz and Dr. Vihasa Govada’s guidance, therapy is always tailored to your individual needs.

Jacob D. Buinewicz, MD is a board-certified general psychiatrist. He graduated from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Trained in the combined use of psychotherapy and medication, he offers evidence based treatment for a variety of psychiatric disorders. He has specific expertise in mood and bipolar disorders, ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD, and PTSD. He also offers care for common sources of stress including life transitions, decreased productivity at work, relationship issues, and grief.

Dr. Buinewicz believes all treatment should begin with a patient-centered comprehensive and holistic evaluation. Patients are involved in creating a treatment plan that may include medications, therapy, or a combination of both. He believes that therapy is often a critical component of care as evidence shows that it provides benefit over medication alone. Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Psychotherapy Involve? +

Psychotherapy involves treatments for individuals who are experiencing various types of mental health conditions and emotional challenges. In addition to managing or alleviating these symptoms, the approach can also include certain psychotherapies that help patients identify the psychological root causes of their condition. Psychotherapy can treat conditions associated with coping with stressful life events, trauma, mental illness, loss, and specific types of mental conditions such as depression and anxiety. Through psychotherapy, Dr. Buinewicz and Dr. Govada can learn about specific issues that are affecting you, as well as the impact that your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours have on your moods.

What is a Psychotherapy Session Like? +

Are you wondering, “What is it like going to therapy for the first time?” Your first psychotherapy session begins with a comprehensive, patient-centered evaluation to understand your unique history, current challenges, and treatment goals. Dr. Buinewicz uses an integrative therapeutic approach, combining techniques from psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Dr. Govada, who provides remote psychiatry for the Pennsylvania region, has a therapeutic approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic principles, and CBT for insomnia (CBTi). She also incorporates Eastern philosophies—including mindfulness, present-moment awareness, and non-attachment—to support greater clarity and emotional resilience.

Sessions are collaborative and conversational, allowing you to explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a safe, supportive environment. Over time, therapy can help you develop practical coping tools, gain new insights, and shift unhelpful patterns that may be holding you back.

Do I Need Psychotherapy, Medication, or Both? Finding the Right Balance +

Another question you might have is, “How do you know if you need medication or therapy?” For some patients, talk therapy alone is enough to achieve meaningful change. Others may benefit from a combination of psychotherapy and medication. As a double board-certified general and addiction psychiatrist, Dr. Buinewicz provides a comprehensive perspective on both therapeutic and pharmacological options.

When medication is recommended, it is closely monitored through personalized medication management. This ensures that your treatment plan remains safe, effective, and responsive to your evolving needs.

There are many complexities involved in medication selection, dosage, side effects, and interaction monitoring. Buckingham Psychiatry provides personalized and comprehensive medication management and support to help you maximize the benefits of medications while reducing potential associated side effects.

Does Psychotherapy Help with Everyday Stress? +

Many people assume psychotherapy is only for major mental health diagnoses, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re dealing with career burnout, parenting stress, or just trying to navigate life’s curveballs, psychotherapy can offer invaluable tools for building resilience and managing stress more effectively. Talking through everyday challenges with a professional helps bring clarity, validation, and fresh perspective—sometimes, that’s all you need to feel like yourself again.

Making Room for Growth: How Psychotherapy Supports Self-Discovery +

Patients often ask, “Can therapy change your life?” or “Can therapy change the way you think?” Psychotherapy isn’t just about symptom relief—it’s about growing into the best version of yourself. Many patients find that therapy becomes a space for reflection, curiosity, and unlocking new dimensions of personal growth. By exploring your core values, patterns, and goals, you can make more empowered decisions, form healthier relationships, and live more authentically. At Buckingham Psychiatry, therapy is designed to evolve as you do.
